NaPoWriMo – Poem #5

Remembering Advice From My Youth

Sit up straight
shoulders back
don’t slouch

Lift your chin
hold your head high
don’t look down your nose at people

Speak up
enunciate
don’t mumble

Be assertive
make your voice heard
don’t be a B-I-T-C-H

Be powerful
believe in yourself
but know when to bend

Show your strength
be firm in your resolve
but do it gently

Take care of yourself
but sacrifice your needs
for those of others

You don’t need another person to take care of you,
to complete you, but yield
to the one you choose

Love, honor, cherish, obey…
wait? obey?!
What century is this?
Whose rules?

At what point am I no longer me
and simply servant
to you?
