NaPoWriMo – Poem #17

on the importance of beer

one sunny day,
many years ago,
while water skiing on the lake
Grandpa started to sink
beneath the surface,
somehow managing to keep
his beer from spilling,
yet allowing his dentures
to sink into the seaweed garden below

NOTE: This poem is inspired by the Day 17 prompt from NaPoWriMo.net – to write a poem re-telling a family anecdote that has stuck with you over time.

  1. Your grandfather and my mother were cut from the same cloth!!! 🤣 When I was 10 I was sailing with my mother in the river in a wooden “race boat” she’s scraped together to buy called ‘Lead Bottom’. Enough said!!! We capsized, and although, skinny as I was I could right her alone, she was scooping up water….wasn’t happening. I was raised on an island and am part fish, so I was swimming around grabbing things from floating away. My mother was laughing, treading water in her groovy hat and sunglasses. Raised in the air in one hand was her cocktail (a bullfrog, probably….lime juice and vodka) and in the other; her cigarettes! 🤣 A friend was not far behind and we were easily rescued. But 43 years later that still makes me laugh!!! Cheers to them both!!! Thank You! 😊

  2. This reminds me of a friend from college. Sue was confined to a wheelchair but exceedingly independent. One day, wheeling herself back from the cafeteria with an icecream cone in hand she pushed one front wheel off the sidewalk. She tumbled forward, executing a perfect somersault, and landed on the ground. There were (thankfully) no injuries and through it all she maintained perfect control of her icecream cone. We laughed about the incident for many months afterwards.
